Four In 10 Drivers Say Their Car Is Their ‘Happy Place’ As FIAT’s ‘Smiles Per Hour’ Reveals The Joy Of Driving

New research commissioned by FIAT reveals that 42 per cent of motorists find driving relaxing, while 53 per cent value the sense of independence it provides. For many, time behind the wheel represents more than simply getting from A to B, with 30 per cent admitting to taking the long way home to extend their journey.

The findings support FIAT’s new ‘Smiles Per Hour’ (SPH) metric, developed in collaboration with cognitive scientist Duncan Williams to better understand how driving makes people feel. Moving beyond traditional performance measures, SPH focuses on emotional response, reflecting a broader shift in how drivers define enjoyment. In testing, the Fiat Grande Panda recorded an average of 258.1 SPH, demonstrating a consistent and measurable level of driving enjoyment. This aligns with the study’s finding that 81 per cent of UK drivers are unaware of their car’s 0-60 mph time, underlining the declining relevance of traditional performance metrics.

The research also highlights the conditions that contribute most to an enjoyable drive. Sunny weather and dry conditions (both 41 per cent) rank highest, followed by peace and quiet (39 per cent) and a good playlist (31 per cent). Coastal routes are considered the most enjoyable by 31 per cent of drivers, while 17 per cent prefer countryside roads.

Everyday moments play a key role in driver satisfaction, with no traffic (59 per cent), hearing a favourite song (52 per cent) and sunny days (51 per cent) among the top triggers for a smile. Small acts of courtesy, such as another driver giving way, were also cited by 39 per cent of respondents.

Overall, driving continues to contribute positively to wellbeing, with 40 per cent of motorists saying they feel happy behind the wheel and 35 per cent agreeing it can actively improve their mood.
More than half (53 per cent) admit to staying in their car longer than necessary after arriving at their destination, simply to enjoy a moment of personal time.
