If you’re a Blue Badge holder, finding the right electric vehicle can sometimes be tricky.
Many of the most accessible EVs (including larger or adapted models) often exceed the £37,000 price cap for the Electric Car Grant, meaning they won’t qualify for this discount. The ECG also doesn’t cover adaptation costs, such as hoists or ramps.
However, there are other forms of support that can help make an electric vehicle more affordable, even if the ECG doesn’t apply:
Plug-in wheelchair accessible vehicle grant (PiWG)
For new electric wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), the base vehicle must cost £50,000 or less, excluding conversion costs. The PiWG is applied automatically at first registration.
Vehicle Tax (VED) exemptions and reductions
If you receive qualifying mobility benefits (such as PIP enhanced rate mobility or DLA higher rate mobility), you may be eligible for full VED exemption. Others may qualify for a 50% reduction. This applies to one vehicle at a time.
Motability Scheme
